Using Ayurveda alongside modern medicine safely

Herbal does not mean inert. What to tell your doctor, and which combinations need care.

Plenty of households use classical Ayurvedic preparations alongside prescribed medicines. That is usually fine, but "natural" is not the same as "no effect" — and where there is an effect, there can be an interaction.

Tell your doctor what you take

Include churnas, kadhas and supplements. Most doctors will have no objection; they simply need the full list to interpret results and avoid overlaps.

Combinations that need care

  • Preparations that lower blood sugar, taken alongside diabetes medicines, can push it too low.
  • Some herbs affect clotting and matter if you are on a blood thinner or facing surgery.
  • Anything sedating adds to prescribed sedatives.

Buy on composition, not just tradition

A standardised extract states how much active constituent it contains. That is the difference between a repeatable dose and a guess.

Timing

Where both are prescribed, spacing them by a couple of hours reduces the chance of one interfering with the absorption of the other. Your pharmacist can advise for your specific combination.
